Working under a master services agreement for environmental consulting services, H2M provided consulting support during the decommissioning and demolition of a 19-acre, 100MW power generating station located in Queens, NY. The station, originally built in 1954, was repowered over the years from burning coal to No. 6 fuel oil then to natural gas. Services included the closure of the Major Petroleum Facility License (MPFL)/Major Oil Storage Facility (MOSF) license, closure of the facility State Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (SPDES) permit and approximately 25 associated process and stormwater outfalls, and a Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) closure of the facility’s former hazardous waste operations. Due to the identification of No. 6 fuel oil contamination during piping and valve pit excavation, H2M also provided oversight for soil and groundwater remediation.
