Ulster County Eastern Correctional Facility
Water Tower and Water Softening System Replacement
Napanoch, NY
We replaced the water softening system and 1.5-million-gallon steel elevated water storage tank at the Eastern Correctional Facility in Ulster County, NY.
The tank was originally constructed in 1990, and over the decades its condition deteriorated. Due to significant neglect and the high cost of maintenance to repair, the facility decided their best option was to replace the tank completely rather than spend the money repairing the current one. Additionally, it would have been difficult to take the tank off-line for maintenance, as it supplied water and pressure to two adjacent facilities.
We recommended a glass-fused-to-steel tank due to its limited and relatively inexpensive maintenance requirements, as well as an active tank mixer to minimize the potential for tank freezing given the cold climate in which the facility is located.
In order to maintain existing system pressures and well pump characteristics, the new tank overflow elevation was required to match the existing tank overflow elevation. We developed unique piping configurations to allow the new tank to connect with the existing distribution system while maintaining the existing tank supply. Wet taps and insertion valves were also required to get the new tank up and running while keeping the existing tank on line.
