New Fire Headquarters

Lexington, MA

The Town of Lexington’s old fire headquarters didn’t meet modern building codes, prevent carcinogenic cross-contamination, or meet trends for gender equity or well-being. It also hindered operations and response times. The new station is on the same site, but proximity to the historic Paul Revere path meant that the team needed to carefully manage all aspects of the site and building layout.

The team comprised Tecton Architects (Architect of Record) and H2M (firematic design). To minimize the impact on the fire service, the team designed a temporary “swing” space with adjacent apparatus bays, where the administrative and living functions of the building could operate during demolition. The new station has six apparatus bays, rooftop solar panels, a state-of-the-art classroom and training space, and decontamination and transition spaces. The new headquarters is certified LEED Gold and exceeds Massachusetts Stretch Energy Code standards by 30%.
