New Rescue Station
Princeton, NJ
The Princeton First Aid and Rescue Squad, Inc. (PFARS), which serves a community of 30,000 people in Princeton, New Jersey outgrew their original station. It took 15 years of working with PFARS to find the ideal location. The selected site had a few complications, though: soil contamination, a Department of Public Works fueling station that had to remain in use, a 30-inch water main that ran below the property, a street closure, and proximity to a very busy road.
The design team remediated the soil, worked the fueling station and street closure into the site layout, and incorporated steel sheeting to protect the building foundations from a potential water main break. Located on a highly visible intersection on a primary entrance road into Princeton, the aesthetic of the building highlights the municipal buildings in the immediate area and stands-out as the future of sustainability.
