Rockville Centre Police Department
Relocation of the Police Department
Rockville Centre, NY
When the Rockville Centre Police Department found deficiencies in their former station, the Village of Rockville Centre opted to relocate the Police Department to space within an existing Water Department facility. The transition was a challenge: the building’s access points were already established, sometimes in less-than-optimal locations; an elevated section formerly used to unload Water Department trucks challenged police programming needs (e.g., officers escorting detainees); and the nearby Village water and electrical utility pipes needed to be protected.
To work around the limitations of the building, the team dedicated the at-grade level to all daily police patrol functions involving detainees with cells designed to New York State Commission of Corrections requirements. A former truck bay is now a Police Department vehicle sally port for internal transport out of public view. The publicly accessible main lobby has ballistic-grade walls, bullet-resistant glass windows, and pass-throughs that protect occupants and police.
