Fire Island Fair Harbor Fire District and Saltaire Water Treatment Well No.2

Fire Island Fair Harbor Fire District and Saltaire Water Treatment Well No.2

Back-up Power Generation and Resiliency

Fire Island, NY

The Fair Harbor Fire District and Saltaire Water Treatment Well No. 2 on Fire Island both lost power during Superstorm Sandy. Utilizing funding available through the Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery (GOSR) program, H2M designed generators and generator platforms for the facilities and worked with GOSR and the Suffolk County DPW through design and construction.

Both facilities were in flood plains and the existing generators had past their useful life expectancy. The new generators were designed to handle the full building loads and elevated above the Design Flood Elevation to protect the generators from damage caused by future flooding.

H2M designed the Fair Harbor facility generator on a steel platform and the Saltaire facility generator on a wood platform to fit within the aesthetics of their respective neighborhoods. H2M also designed a diesel-fueled generator to provide emergency backup power for the critical facilities during a power outage or storm.
