H2M’s Kevin Paul on the Dangers of Riverine Flooding

NJBIZ recently published an article by H2M Senior Vice President and Director of Private Real Estate Kevin Paul, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, CFM, about how property owners can protect their buildings from destructive riverine flooding.

Riverine flooding is the result of a water channel overflowing into the floodplain, usually caused by a downstream blockage or an overabundance of rain or snow. Many inland communities are susceptible to this type of flooding, even those far outside federal flood zones.

The article spotlights a resiliency project H2M performed at the Hamilton Stage at the Union County Performing Arts Center in Rahway, NJ, which suffered significant damage when Hurricane Ida flooded the nearby Rahway River in 2021. H2M recommended that the City of Rahway implement dry floodproofing technologies, which include floodproof doors that create watertight seals under high pressure and floodproof gates that are capable of self-activating without electricity, mechanical assistance, or human intervention.
