H2M Helps Transform Former Retail Space Into Innovative Advanced Specialty Care Facility
By: Paul Foerth, P.E., CEM
Associate, Senior Project Engineer
H2M helped transform a 170,000-square-foot former retail space within the Smith Haven Mall into the innovative Stony Brook Medicine Advanced Specialty Care facility. This new space centralizes various medical specialties under one roof into a seamless blend of medical expertise and retail convenience.
H2M designed new HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems and reused existing infrastructure to accommodate the clinical facility’s many highly specific needs. The cost-effective rooftop HVAC system maintains the differing temperature and air quality needs of various zones of the facility. Meanwhile, a streamlined plumbing system ensures the facility’s vital functions remain reliable at all times.
Lastly, the flexible new electrical system features provisional conduit systems that allow future feeders to be installed, as well as a rooftop generator to ensure the facility stays operational during emergencies. H2M also saved the client money by modifying the facility’s existing MEP infrastructure.
