When a major utility company in the Northeast needed help with an environmental clean-up, they called upon H2M to investigate and coordinate remedial efforts. A 51,000-gallon dielectric cable fluid release had taken place in Nassau County, NY. Two source areas were discovered where dielectric fluid had been released, with one release located within 1,000 feet of a public water supply well under construction. H2M began with an environmental site investigation to characterize the extent of soil and groundwater impacts. The fate and transport study addressed potential migration of dielectric fluid below the surface. The study included an evaluation of contaminant properties, investigation of the local hydrogeological setting and calculation of the rate of migration. Following an aquifer pump and rising-head slug tests, aquifer characteristics such a transmissivity and hydraulic conductivity were evaluated. A groundwater pump and treat system was designed and constructed in record time. The quick response of the H2M team prevented the di-electric fluid from contaminating the new well. Operated by H2M for over five years, the treatment system has contained the release.

Located on the scenic Hudson River, only a few miles upriver from Manhattan, the 14-acre BICC site in Yonkers, NY was in bad shape. The site’s industrial history began in the 1880s when it was used for manufacturing wire and cable products. A 130-year history as an industrial site had left the property contaminated with PCBs, lead and VOCs. Blackacre Partners repurposed and revived the property as a film stage from 1999-2007, when it was used for major motion pictures, including Kate and Leopold, Johnny Depp’s Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Zoolander and The Stepford Wives. Working for Blackacre, H2M provided environmental engineering support for demolition and clean-up activities on the property. Site buildings totaling over 200,000 square feet were demolished, 1,100 feet of subsurface stormwater drains were removed, over 1,500 feet of bulkhead was replaced, and 40,000 tons of impacted soils and 23,000 cubic yards of PCB-impacted river sediments were excavated and disposed. H2M conducted pre- and post-remediation soil and sediment borings, prepared Work Plans and provided full-time inspection services and construction coordination throughout the remediation activities. Our analysis included a tidal influence study and aquifer pump tests to assess hydraulic properties for the design of a dewatering system. Upon completing the work, H2M collected and analyzed over 200 post-excavation endpoint samples and prepared a Remediation Report documenting the work. The final phase of the project includes removal of impacted river sediments. Once completed, the property will be ready for yet another life. Several redevelopment projects have been proposed, including a $900 million residential/retail complex on the Hudson River waterfront called Point Street Landing

H2M’s Industrial Hygiene Division provides a multitude of services including mold assessments, mold remediation specifications, post remediation clearance testing, lead testing and indoor air quality testing. The Town of Oyster Bay asked H2M to conduct a remedial investigation and develop a remedial design for a seven-acre portion of Bethpage Community Park, which it had acquired from Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation. Prior to initial construction of the park in 1962, the property was utilized for wastewater settling ponds and fire training. Following the surface and subsurface investigation, H2M prepared plans and specs for the excavation and disposal of contaminated soils. All in all, 173,000 tons of contaminated soil and debris was removed from the site under H2M’s watchful eye. The project was completed in a timely and safe manner, with minimal disruption to the surrounding community. Despite the park’s location directly across the street from a high school, soil removal was orchestrated using 5,300 dump trucks without causing a single delay or inconvenience to school buses or students.

When New York City wanted to re-develop a 20,000 SF lot in the 125th Street Corridor of Harlem, H2M was called upon to implement a comprehensive brownfield remediation. The NYC Office of Environmental Remediation (OER) identified the lot for focused redevelopment, which included demolition of 10 multi-story commercial and residential buildings. Contamination discovered at the site included semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) and metals in subsurface soils and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the groundwater. Over 10,000 tons of impacted soils were excavated and disposed offsite. To remediate chlorinated hydrocarbons, H2M injected 2,000 lbs. of Hydrogen Releasing Compounds (HRC) into the groundwater via 20 injection points. The results spoke for themselves, with hydrocarbon concentrations reduced from 90 ppb to undetectable within six months. Upon completion of the remediation, a modern, 4-story multi-tenant commercial building was constructed on the site.
