Oil release prior to coverage period

The homeowner knew there was a problem when he began to find oil in his swimming pool. Unbeknownst to him, his buried fuel oil tank had corroded to the point of leaking oil into the soil adjacent to the pool. Under contract with the insurance company, H2M performed the initial inspection and soil sampling. Age-dating the soil, we determined that the #2 heating oil release occurred prior to the policy coverage period. The claim was denied after determining the tank had been leaking for 10 years, 7 years prior to the policy period. An estimated savings of $70,000.00 was realized through H2M’s site work.

The fuel oil that had leaked out of the damaged 550-gallon tank was later cleaned up with a full site remediation by the homeowner’s contractor.
