A Man of Many Hats

Melville, NY: (November 28, 2016) – Steven J. Hyman, P.E. is a Senior Vice President at H2M architects + engineers and director of the firm’s highly regarded civil engineering division—a group comprised of civil engineers, land surveyors, landscape architects and land use planners. In his spare time, Mr. Hyman serves as H2M’s Real Estate Market Leader, which allows him to be involved in exciting land development and building design projects for many of the region’s most prominent land development firms. He also serves as village engineer for the Incorporated Villages of Lloyd Harbor and Farmingdale, and provides civil engineering services to the Village of Garden City, as well.

Mr. Hyman’s career at H2M began in 1979, as a young staff engineer in the civil engineering group. In 1983, he ventured off on his own, providing civil/site engineering services for land development firms in Long Island, the lower Hudson Valley, and Connecticut. His firm was acquired by H2M in 2006, after 23 years in private practice. Mr. Hyman continues to apply his engineering experience daily, managing and working on some of H2M’s most visible projects, including the regionally transformative Ronkonkoma Hub re-development project, the Ritz Carlton Residences at North Hills (RXR Realty) and several interesting stormwater management projects, including a complete watershed analysis of the Meadowbrook Corridor, an area straddling the Meadowbrook Parkway and extending from Westbury, NY down to the south shore estuaries of Freeport and Merrick.

After watching his father and brother work in the building construction industry as wire lathers, Mr. Hyman chose civil engineering as a major at the Polytechnic Institute of New York, where he earned both his Bachelor’s (1978) and Masters of Science (19893) degrees in civil engineering. A designer at heart, he loves to work through the problems and issues involved in any kind of civil engineering project.

Mr. Hyman thinks of himself as a “hands-on leader” who demands a lot of himself, and has high expectations of his team. He is most proud of the way the Civil Engineering group has established itself over the last 11 years. He attributes that success to his group’s highly interactive process for delivering civil engineering services to clients. According to Mr. Hyman, “We’re best suited to projects with technical and jurisdictional complexity. Our clients appreciate that we understand each project brings a unique set of challenges, and that we bring the experience and commitment required for them to be successful.”

Mr. Hyman most enjoys his work as H2M’s Real Estate Market Leader, because it allows him to work with all of the different technical groups at H2M. He also loves H2M’s entrepreneurial environment, and the fact he is free to pursue virtually any idea he feels will benefit the firm. “The firm’s culture is such that people are not limited in their pursuits. This is great, because with our huge pool of diversified talent, new opportunities and challenges are a daily occurrence.”

The best part about H2M, according to Mr. Hyman, is that he met his wife there. “Back in the early 1980’s, my wife Linda was an administrative professional at H2M, and I was a staff engineer in the civil engineering group. Although she has since moved on to have her own career as a licensed clinical social worker, I’m certainly glad for her time here at H2M.” The Hyman’s are very proud of their three daughters; Lauren (a behavioral analyst at a school for Autism), Julie (a certified public accountant) and Meagan (a middle school Spanish teacher), who are now at the beginning stages of their own professional careers.

As avid travelers, one of their favorite destinations is Boston, where they go to visit daughters Julie and Meagan, who currently reside in the city. While there, Mr. Hyman likes to explore the city and occasionally attend Red Sox games. As devout Yankee fans, their favorite game at Fenway was Derek Jeter’s final game of his professional career.

The Hyman’s have also started exploring other parts of the world through travel. Recently, they have taken breathtaking trips to Scotland, Italy and Spain. In his spare time, Steve also enjoys gardening and taking care of the backyard pond. He finds them both relaxing, a form of exercise, and a place to escape. Mr. Hyman’s favorite hobby is golf, and everyone at H2M is aware of his love (obsession) for the game.

Mr. Hyman is a man who wears many hats at H2M, and enjoys each one of them.
