The Community Comes First

Melville, NY (November 14, 2016) – Erik D. Heuler, R.A., LEED AP BD+C, LEED AP + Homes is a Project Architect and Sustainability Coordinator for H2M architects + engineers. Throughout his career, Mr. Heuler has used his expertise in the architecture industry and his passion for sustainability to help improve our communities every day by putting their best interests first.

Mr. Heuler finds architectural design to be one of the most rewarding parts of his job. The creative outlet architectural design provides, and seeing the results of his hard work benefiting the client and the community is something he finds rewarding. One of his proudest accomplishments since starting at H2M is earning his Architectural License. This has allowed him to work on larger scale projects which helps him to expand his architectural knowledge and experience. One such project Mr. Heuler is particularly proud of is the Jones Beach West Bath House. Approaching this iconic Long Island building was “like a mystery needing to be solved.”

After studying old drawings and photos of the West Bath House, countless site visits, conversing with colleagues, and unfolding this “mystery”, the team uncovered what was originally there, and it was truly magnificent. Mr. Heuler said, “The most exciting part of this project was uncovering the evidence and working with a team of experts both inside and outside of H2M giving a rebirth to this historic building. The finished product was rewarding to see, and a career highlight.”

Mr. Heuler is very active with H2M’s Sustainability Committee, working hard to develop processes, implement tools, and open dialogue between professionals and clients. He considers high performance design and a whole systems approach critical for all projects. Mr. Heuler believes that H2M’s mission of “building sustainable communities” requires constant evaluation and effort to be successful, and is a key motivator in how he approaches his work and life. This motivation continues outside the walls of H2M with his involvement in the U.S Green Building Council (USGBC) Long Island Chapter. As a member since 2008, Mr. Heuler has Chaired Committees and participated in many of the Chapter’s initiatives. He has actively advocated for LEED and green building practices, contributed to educational seminars, and played a critical role in the Attainable Long Island competition to help develop affordable sustainable housing.

Prior to H2M, Mr. Heuler was a project manager at another Architecture and Planning, where he participated in all phases of architectural projects including schematic design, design development, construction documents, and construction administration. He also contributed to the company’s green building division, providing consulting and documentation services on numerous commercial and residential LEED buildings, energy efficiency upgrades, and renewable energy projects.

Mr. Heuler worked on several projects as an employee of his former Architecture firm in conjunction with H2M, including Manorville Ambulance and Mastic Ambulance. While working on those projects, he started to build relationships with H2M employees such as Danny Tanzi, Adam Post, and Kevin Medler. Once it was time for a change of scenery, Mr. Heuler felt H2M was the right place to work. Mr. Heuler mentioned his colleagues are one of the most enjoyable parts of working at H2M, specifically when they engage in deep conversations about the profession and how architecture can be used to benefit our communities.

During his free time Mr. Heuler loves to explore nature and New York City. He describes how he enjoys observing the dialogue between the built and natural environments, particularly how the two different extremes interact in New York City. He also loves to visit the City because of the abundance of cultural institutions and has referred to himself as a “museum junky.” Among his favorites museums are the Eyebeam, Cooper Hewitt, and the MOMA.

Mr. Heuler is married to his wife Denise. They enjoy spending time with a small group of friends, many of which they both gained from their shared love of music. They have traveled across the country, and across an ocean with friends following one of their favorite bands, Nine Inch Nails. One thing most people do not know about Mr. Heuler is that before embarking on a career in Architecture he was in the music industry. He was the creator and host of the radio show “Local Buzz” on WRCN. Mr. Heuler’s commitment to the community goes way back as he tried to help build the local music scene by featuring local bands on the show and hosting band nights at neighborhood venues to get their name out.

Mr. Heuler is an architecture and sustainability expert, an active traveler, and a music lover. He is a man who wears many hats, and is an expert at all that he does. Mr. Heuler has always been successful to find ways to help the community, and the people who are a part of it.

Whether it was working as a radio show host promoting bands, in architecture, or with H2M sustainability, he has done his fair share for the community. Mr. Heuler clearly uses his professional expertise, passion, and love for nature every day to improve our communities now and for our future generations.
