Crossing the Finish Line

David Mammina, R.A., is the Director of Healthcare and Senior Living Practice at H2M architects + engineers. Throughout his career, Mr. Mammina has grown to become a well-recognized architect, specializing in healthcare, multi-family housing projects, senior housing, nursing homes, affordable housing, and high-end high rise structures. He is also highly qualified in the design of office, educational and religious buildings.

Mr. Mammina is one of three architects invited to the New York State Department of Health’s Architectural Standards Workgroup, a group of 20 professionals representing all factions of the healthcare industry. The committee is charged with the redevelopment of healthcare regulations and Building Codes related to Assisted Living.

Prior to realizing his dream of becoming an architect, Mr. Mammina grew up thinking he would become a lawyer someday. At an educational crossroads, Mr. Mammina reevaluated his goals and reflected back to a time when he would build cardboard cities with Elmer’s glue and tape. That is the moment Mr. Mammina realized he wanted to become an architect.

Mr. Mammina enrolled in Pratt Institute’s five-year architecture program, which he completed in just three years proving his natural ability and expertise. His Baccalaureate Thesis project, a city-wide competition for the design of the New York State Maritime Museum at South Street Seaport, was awarded first prize by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation and was subsequently constructed and incorporated into New York City’s Bicentennial “Tall Ships” July 4th celebration.

Upon graduation, Mr. Mammina joined an international architecture firm and later went on to work for a smaller firm that specialized in commercial design. In 1987, Mr. Mammina ventured off to begin his own practice where he continued working on commercial and multifamily residential projects throughout the New York metropolitan area. As his firm grew, Mr. Mammina established himself as a leader in architecture for the healthcare industry.

After collaborating on a number of projects, Mr. Mammina’s firm joined H2M architects + engineers in 2013. “When I had my own firm, there were a number of times I didn’t win a project because we weren’t perceived large enough to take it on,” Mr. Mammina stated. “I’m excited now to be on the other side of that,” he continued.

Mr. Mammina has won several awards throughout his career. He won first prize for excellence in design from the Queens County Builders and Contractors Associates for the Buena Vida Nursing Home, the Linden Court Apartments, Comp USA, and the Flushing Manor Geriatric Care Center. In 1989 he was presented a Special Award by the New York Society of Architects for service to the Architectural profession and in 1992 Mr. Mammina was appointed as a Commissioner and is Chairman of the Board of Zoning Appeals for the Town of North Hempstead in Nassau County.

Outside of the office, Mr. Mammina is an avid runner and just completed his third Ironman in Lake Placid, NY. He also leads the H2M running club alongside Christine Woodson, and had more than 40 H2Mers participate in the 2016 Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s US Coffee 4 Mile Run/Walk, combining two of his passions as he is also on the Board of Directors for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and has helped to raise more than $500,000 throughout the past 10 years through varying events. Mr. Mammina is also a singer and songwriter, channeling the likes of James Taylor, and hand crafts guitars in his spare time.

David Mammina is an acclaimed architect, a three-time Ironman athlete, an advocate for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and a passionate musician. He is a man who wears many hats, and an expert at all that he does. Mr. Mammina has ran through every finish line in his life, building him to be the expert he is today inside and outside the office walls.
