MELVILLE, NY- From June 15- 21, 2016, John McIlhargy, Director of Sports Development for H2M architects + engineers helped conduct the 2016 DoD Warrior Games as Technical Director of the event. The remarkable man in the top left photo (black army shirt) is Staff Sgt Matt Lammers, U.S. Army Retired. In 2007, he was injured in an IED (improvised explosive device) attack in Baghdad. In H.S. Matt was a Cross Country Athlete and Basketball player and taught himself how to swim during his recovery. This is his second Warrior Games and he tackled the 50 Free, 100 Free, 50 Back and 50 Breast. It was an honor for John to meet this man who has such a strong positive spirit and who’s dictionary DOES NOT include the word CAN'T. He's not satisfied with just completing races, he wants to be fast. They spent some time with Metro staff talking technique and John took some pictures with his staff as you see here.
After the event a Major General came up and embraced Sgt Lammers saying "you are one bad dude!" When he found out Matt served in the division he commanded in Iraq, The General Tore off the Division Patch from his shoulder, gave it to Sgt Lammers saying, "I would be honored if you'd take this...I carried it all through Iraq" Both men shared tears of mutual respect and appreciation. John was not ashamed to say he did as well. John said “I am truly fortunate to have been in the presence of such great Americans as a volunteer and technical director to the 2016 Warrior Games. I'd like to ask everyone Whenever you feel self-doubt or think that obstacles are insurmountable, take a look at the picture and feel the same strength that drives Matt Lammers to succeed...no matter what!”
John and his staff felt the loving atmosphere throughout the entire event. The time and effort the “warriors” put on display truly inspired everyone in the facility. John and his staff are looking forward to the next Warriors Games, however they will never forget how special this past Warrior Games was.
The 2016 DoD Warrior Games is an adaptive sports competition for wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans. Approximately 250 athletes will participate in eight sporting events, representing teams from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy/Coast Guard, Air Force, U.S. Special Operations Command and the United Kingdom (U.K.) Armed Forces. The DoD Warrior Games highlight the resiliency and warrior spirit of service members, veterans and their families and caregivers. Adaptive sports and athletic reconditioning activities play a fundamental role in the successful recovery and reintegration of our service members and veterans.
John was recently re-elected as General Chairman of Metropolitan Swimming Inc. Metropolitan Swimming Inc. is one of the largest governing bodies for competitive swimming in the United States with nearly 12,000 athletes and coaches, 90 club members and representing over 26000 contributing families. Affiliate members include YMCA, Boys and Girls Clubs, NYC Parks and Master Swimming (open water partners). Metropolitan swimming had many volunteers help assist in the heart warming event, John Mclhargy of H2M architects + engineers and his staff were very proud of the outcome!
